Kibaki issues title deeds to the
Ogiek
By PPS (Sunday, October 16, 2005)
President Mwai Kibaki said Saturday the government was not issuing
land title deeds to solicit favours from the people.
He said it is an inalienable right for all Kenyans who own
property to be issued with titles and criticized representations
to the contrary as cheap propaganda.
President Kibaki was speaking at Olenguruone divisional
headquarters in Nakuru district when he issued 12,000 land title
deeds to members of the Ogiek community.
"It is unfortunate that such a well intentioned action meant
to benefit the people had been politicized," he added.
The President pointed out that the issuance of the titles was not
connected to the ongoing court cases adding it was cheap
propaganda and an act of mischief to try to deny the people these
important documents.
Said the President, "The
government is simply fulfilling a pledge made to the Ogiek
community 13 years ago and it is insincere to politicize the
matter."
President Kibaki said the government would continue to issue title
deeds to land owners across the country to enable them to develop
their farms confidently.
He however advised the
beneficiaries against selling their land saying it would not only
defeat the purpose of issuing the title deeds but also make them
destitute.
And speaking at Keringeti market where he made a stop over,
President Kibaki noted that those opposed to the proposed
constitution had been involved in its initial preparation and
wondered why they had now turned against it.
"All interests have been taken
care of in the proposed constitution, you should therefore ignore
those spreading lies against the document as they were involved in
hammering out the document," he added.
The President made other stopovers
at Elburgon and Njoro towns where he urged people of different
ethnic groups living in the area to live harmoniously.
He observed that tribalism had
wreaked havoc in the area in the past, noting that Kenyans should
use their diversity as a basis for a strong nation.
Also present were ministers Amos Kimunya, John Koech, John Michuki,
Assistant Ministers Mirugi Kariuki, Alicen Chellaite, Kipkalya
Kones, Mps Moses Cheboi, Paul Sang and Franklin Bett.
