Ogiek leader attacked and nearly killed

Nakuru / Kenya 01.08.2005 - The indigenous Ogiek and all their friends are in profound shock after Councilor Joseph Miangari of Nessuit ward was attacked in his house at 3am on the morning of 01. August 2005 by unknown gangsters. He was left with cuts all over the body while his wife was cut on legs and hands. The attackers used pangas (machetes), a usual weapon in East-Africa to hack people to death in paid-for or instigated assassinations.

The immediate reason is unknown. Both victims are admitted at War Memorial Hospital in Nakuru. Their condition is improving as one of their close relatives and friends report.

This brutal attack has caused a severe shock to all Ogiek and continues a series of death treats and attacks against Ogiek leaders who stand firm against the illegal evictions of Ogiek from the Mau forests and the take-over attempts of the Mau forests and water resources by corporate players misusing the government machinery.
