The Government has revoked land allocations at Rift Valley's controversial Likia settlement Scheme. The scheme was rocked by violent clashes two months ago. Close to 1,600 acres will revert to forest land and 471 deeds will be cancelled.

The land was excised from the Likia forest, which is a water catchment area in the Mau Forest Escarpment which drains to the Sondu and Mara rivers.

During the violence two months ago, three people died and several were injured before the government intervened to restore peace. During a visit to the scheme last weekend, the Minister in charge of internal security, Chris Murungaru gave the farmers who had cultivated in the forest time to harvest their crop and thereafter to leave.

He directed Rift Valley provincial commissioner Wilfred Ndolo to stop further cultivation. Murungaru said the conflict in Likia scheme was a reflection of land disputes resulting from lack of a proper land policy.
