Ogiek villagers under pressure to leave homes

December 8, 2004 - In the village of Kiptilian members of the Ogiek are being pressed to leave their houses by Silvester Ntutu, brother of the member of the Kenyan parliament Ole Ntutu. Silvester Ntutu claims to have land rights of this place in the ancient Mau forest and has threatened several villagers that he is able to call in the help of the army.

A delegation of villagers has gone to the town of Narok to protest at the office of the district governor. The only measure he took was offering two body guards to Silvester Ntutu.

On the long run there seems to be some hope for the Ogiek. It is expected that the parliament will vote for a new constitution before the elections to be held in 2007, acknowledging the land rights of all indigenous peoples in Kenya.
