FIRST OGIEK EXHIBITION - A GREAT SUCCESS

The historic event of a first Ogiek exhibition ended at the Nakuru Agricultural Show last Sunday and was a great success. The Ogiek Peoples Development Program through its Centre for Endangered Languages project facilitated the event from 12th-17th July 2004.

Honeybags, traditional fire ignition tools, different types of all-natural honey, traditional attires and beehives were among the items exhibited by ten Ogiek. These Ogiek representatives, clad in their traditional regalia, were proud to present their culture to the many thousand visitors.

The Ogiek presentation attracted many Kenyans, among them dignitaries, diplomats, members of parliament, ministers, chancellors, students and foreign visitors, like a lawyer from Germany (himself a hunter), who contributed significantly to the presentation itself and its success.

The press and the media were there and reported (see Daily Nation Pg 17 of Thursday of 22nd and Taifa Leo Pg 7 of 21st July for details).

We are proud of our culture and language, the Ogiek people said with one voice and opted to now even participate at the Nairobi International Trade fair in September 2004.

OPDP does request well wishers to support also that presentation and assist the community with their other projects like a Voluntary Counselling and Testing Centre for HIV, the Aids Awareness Programme and their own re-afforestation programmes, planting striclty only naturally propagated, indigenous trees.
