Two more people were at the weekend killed in renewed fighting
between two rival communities in Marsabit.
The deaths bring to five the number of victims since the fighting
started on Thursday.
Those who died on Saturday hailed from Kijiji Village, which is
adjacent to Songa Village, where the other three were residing.
The latest victims were an old man and a 12-year-old girl, who was
a Standard Three pupil at Parkishon primary school.
A source said rivalry between the two communities was renewed last
week after two men from the two communities fought over a woman.
One of the men was killed, prompting his kinsmen to exact revenge
by shooting dead two people from the rival community.
Several people were reportedly injured during the fighting, which
occurred about 16 kilometres from Marsabit Town. The source said
those injured were treated at Songa health centre and discharged.
Tension remained high in the two villages, with heavily armed
police officers being deployed in the area.
Two police officers were on Saturday admitted to Marsabit District
Hospital after they suffered severe injuries when roofs of their
houses were blown off by a strong wind.
The officers, based at Eladhi police post in the newly created
Chalbi District, were, however, said to be in stable condition.
Two suspects
Meanwhile, two suspects have been arrested in connection with last
week’s killing of 12 people in Trans Nzoia District.
The area police boss, Mr Bernard Muli, said that among the
arrested is a member of a militia gang, who has been soliciting
protection fees from residents.
“The suspect was found in possession of Sh23,000 and a list of
names of people who have paid the protection fee,” said Mr Muli.
They were arrested in the ongoing operation to flush out members
of the militia from Sosio Village, the police boss said, adding,
police have received vital information that will lead to the
arrest of other members of the gang.
