Unclaimed bodies of post-election violence victims should not be
buried in mass graves, the Director of Medical Services, Dr James
Nyikal ordered Thursday.
The bodies should be buried in individual well marked graves in
case a matter arises in future that might need reference, he said.
Dr Nyikal said councils should not charge relatives of violence
victims hospital, public mortuary and grave fees.
He was speaking at the Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital
after visiting Naivasha District Hospital and hundreds of
displaced people in several camps.
Unclaimed bodies
Provincial hospital medical superintendent George Mugenya told Dr
Nyikal that there were nine unclaimed bodies at the mortuary. He
noted that the hospital would have to pay the council for the
disposal of the bodies.
Dr Mugenya said the hospital was adversely affected by the
post-election violence, with the revenue collected through
cost-sharing going down by half.
In January, the hospital collected Sh3.9 million down from the
usual monthly collection of Sh7.9 million, he said.
Dr Mugenya added that the decline was due to waivers given to all
post-election victims treated at the hospital.
About 400 such victims were treated at the hospital, with 197
being admitted in critical condition he said.
