Ramaphosa's presence in Kenya causes a stir

February 01, 2008

Chairperson of Kenya's mediation team Kofi Annan asked Cyril Ramaphosa to help in resolving the east African country's political crisis.

But government negotiators aren't happy because of Ramaphosa's alleged business ties with opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Meanwhile UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met mediation teams and Odinga today.

Ban urged Kenya's feuding politicians to find a peaceful way out of the post-election unrest that has claimed nearly 1 000 lives and displaced up to 300 000 people.

Ban met with Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki at the Africa Union summit in Ethiopia yesterday.
