Libyan Leader Muammar Gadaffi says the current African Union (AU) structures are too weak to handle conflicts on the continent.

Addressing the closing ceremony of the AU summit in Ethiopia, Gadaffi said the Kenyan crisis could have been dealt with much more quickly if the continent had a common Defence Ministry.

The AU has elected new members for the roles of Commissioner, Chairperson and Deputy. Jean Ping, who replaces Professor Alpha Konare says the continent still has many hurdles to overcome before its total integration. The next AU summit will be held in Tanzania.

Tanzania takes over the AU Chairmanship at a time that Kenya has been rocked by violence, Zimbabwe and the Ivory Coast are going towards an election and the Sudanese peace process is still in a delicate phase. During its term, Tanzania will also be hoping to make a breakthrough on some of the troubled areas.
