MOMBASA, Kenya (Reuters) - A gang of youths hacked two Germans to death with machetes during an apparent robbery attempt in a private villa in Kenya's coastal resort of Diani late on Sunday, police said on Monday.

The wife of one of the dead, a German tourist who had arrived in Kenya on holiday a fortnight ago, was also injured in the attack and had been taken to hospital. The second victim was the German owner of the villa.

Police said the killings did not appear to be linked to violence which has rocked large parts of Kenya following the disputed re-election of President Mwai Kibaki a month ago.

"This was organised crime. We are treating it as murder," local police chief Stanley Lamai said.

The gang of around eight youths forced themselves into the villa compound as a watchman opened the gate to allow the Germans in after they returned from dinner, police said. The youths escaped with a stolen camera and some money.

Around 800 people have been killed in ethnic fighting and clashes with the security forces around Kenya since the December 27 polls, violence which has battered the country's image as an east African tourism and trade hub.

German tourist and businessman battered to death in Kenyan resort town

Malaysia Star, Malaysia

MOMBASA, Kenya (AP): A German tourist and a businessman were battered to death by a gang of robbers who trailed them to their apartment at a southeastern Kenyan beach resort, police said Monday.

Police officer Stanley Lemai said there was a long struggle Sunday night between the men and the robbers, who had overpowered the security guard at the Diani beach resort.

"They were killed with crude weapons, like clubs and machetes. Both of them were hit in the head,'' Lemai said. He said one man died on the spot and the other shortly after he was taken to the hospital. Police refused to identify the two men except to say one was a resident German businessman and the other a German visitor.

Diani is about 5 kilometers (three miles) south of Mombasa port, Kenya's tourist capital.

The deaths were not linked to the ethnic violence that has driven many tourists from Kenya since a disputed Dec. 27 presidential vote.

Lemai said the German men were killed with ``crude'' weapons, such as clubs and machetes, and had sustained head injuries, AP reported. The businessman lived in Kenya, the newswire said. Police declined to identify the Germans, AP said.

Berlin - The German Foreign Ministry said Monday it was investigating reports that two Germans have died in the wave of post-election violence sweeping Kenya. A spokesman said the German embassy in Nairobi was trying to verify reports that a Kenya-based German businessman and a tourist were beaten to death by armed robbers.

Germany's n-tv news channel quoted Kenyan police as saying the pair was attacked at a holiday village 5 kilometres south of the coastal city of Mombasa.

The German government has been advising its nationals to avoid unnecessary travel to the east African nation, following ethnic clashes triggered by the outcome of last month's disputed presidential election.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga claims to vote that returned President Mwai Kibaki to power was rigged.
