Nairobi - The death toll caused by ethnic violence in the Kenyan
province Rift Valley has risen above 80 in three days. In the
provincial capital Nakuru alone 45 people were killed, mainly by
machetes.
The latest violence broke out in Thursday between supporters of
President Mwai Kibaki and his rival Raila Odinga, who belong to
different ethnic groups. Since the presidential elections at the
end of last month, hundreds of people have been killed throughout
Kenya.
After visiting camps for displaced people in the west of the
country, former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan said
he has seen "gross and systematic human rights abuses".
He said the abuses should not remain unpunished.
Mr Annan will continue his efforts to mediate in the conflict. On
Thursday he succeeded in bringing President Kibaki and opposition
leader Raila Odinga together for their first direct talks but
without achieving a breakthrough.
