Germany Says Two Nationals, a Dutchman Arrested by Kenya Police

By Brian Parkin and Heather Langan

Jan. 18 (Bloomberg) - Germany's Foreign Office in Berlin confirmed the arrest of two of the country's citizens and a Dutch national by Kenyan authorities yesterday as the trio tried to leave the strife-torn country.

German Embassy officials have spoken to authorities in the Kenyan capital Nairobi to establish the reason for the arrests and are in contact with the individuals being held, said a Foreign Office spokesman, who declined to be identified.

Citing Kenyan police, the Associated Press reported today that the arrests followed suspicion that the three took part in "terrorist activities."

At least two of the suspects have ties to opposition leader Raila Odinga, AP cited police as saying.

The German Foreign Ministry declined to comment on the alleged background to the arrests or on the health of the three individuals.

Odinga and his Orange Democratic Movement have led days of protests since the Dec. 27 re-election of President Mwai Kibaki. They allege Kibaki rigged the vote.
