Nobel Peace laureate Prof Wangari Maathai, has urged the Government to establish the cause of the resurgence of crime.

Mathai said some elements in the police force could be having a hand in this latest escalation of insecurity.

Some politicians, she said, were also to blame.

Maathai, who is also the MP for Tetu, also urged the Government to address the increase of illicit firearms.

Speaking on Sunday to women groups at a seminar at Wamagana Catholic Church in Tetu organized by the Kenya Women Parliamentarians, also faulted the shooting of suspected criminals.

"Killing suspected thugs is not a solution; establishing the cause of crime and arresting suspects is better," said Mathai.

"I don’t believe we can get rid of killings and robberies through shooting suspects. It creates a situation where thugs will try to kill the police before they are killed, and Kenya would be a region of killings and killings."

Drug abuse and unemployment, she said, were driving the youth to crime.

She further expressed worries over the tendency of tribal crashes to erupt during election years.

The MP criticised some politicians, who he said push their agendas by inciting communities.

Maathai asked voters to elect good leaders in the General Election, scheduled for later this year.
