The Parliamentary Committee on Administration and National Security is preparing summons for Internal Security minister Mr John Michuki over the Mt Elgon clashes.

"As soon as we return to Nairobi next week, we will summon Michuki before we compile our final report to be tabled in Parliament," said Changamwe MP Mr Ramadhan Kajembe, who chairs the committee.

The team, the MP said, had gathered valuable information, which it would present in a report.

Kajembe was speaking at Kapsokwany on Wednesday, where the committee met the local leaders, including area MP Mr John Serut, former MPs Mr Wilberforce Kisiero and Mr Joseph Kimkung, religious leaders, councillors and elders from the Soy and Ndorobo clans.

The Kajembe team included MPs Mr Musa Sirma, Mr Abdalla Ngozi, Mr Noah Arap Too, Mr Franklin Bett and Mr Wycliffe Osundwa.

Earlier, the committee met members of the Provincial Security team - led by Western PC Mr Abdul Mwaserah - in Kakamega.

Kajembe said there was a possibility of peace in Mt Elgon if the Government showed commitment in addressing the problem.

"We are not going to pre-empt the information we have before tabling it in Parliament because the Standing Orders of the House prohibit us from doing so," said Kajembe.

He appealed to the warring factions to keep peace and avoid revenge. He said the Government would be put to task if it emerged that death and suffering occurred as a result of negligence.

Osundwa said they had been informed that 76 people had died in the clashes over the Chebyuk Settlement Scheme, and not 150 as earlier claimed.

Kajembe said the committee would liaise with Ugandan authorities to assist repatriate more than 5,000 displaced people.

"We are going to talk to our counterparts and also use the Amani Forum to assist them to come back home," said Kajembe.

Members of the rag-tag Sabaot Land Defence Force have defied a Government order to surrender firearms.

Mwasserah said security personnel did not recover any guns during the amnesty that ended on Thursday.
