Six Ogiek Spend Nights of Easter in Njoro Police Custody!

Mau Forests, 11. April 2007- Six Ogiek have been charged this morning for trespass on land of the grabbers. It is believed that the powerful land grabbers from the former government regime are friendly with the Police in Njoro, hence the arrest made on 4th/4/07. They have been released on Cash bail of Kshs.3,500 ( US$ 70). They are represented by Lawyer Juma Kiplenge from the Endorois community. The Ogiek leaders are now camping in Nakuru town to fundraise for Kshs.21,000 for their release.

They were denied access to receive food from their relatives nor to talk to anyone.

The land in Ngongongeri has been subject to controversy since 1998 when former president Moi men decided to hijack it, displacing the Ogiek. Their names are as follows, all aged between 22-34 years.

  • Alex Naisuru
  • Onesmus Leshuari
  • Mike Nailinyo
  • Nikson Munyereri
  • Alfred Munyereri
  • John Leshuari
