UN Special Rapporteur Visit
to Hunter - Gatherer communities
In his recent trip to Kenya, Prof Radolfo Stavenhagen met with
Ogiek, Sengwer, Elmolo leaders and actually visited Ogiek and
Yiaku territories.
The visit was very successful and the communities raised many
issues affecting the enjoyment of their human rights.
This included lack of recognition, denial and lack of access to
land nd basic services among others.
In his farewell speech, the UN special Rapporteur highlighted the
many human rights abuses being visited on Indigenous Peoples in
Kenya and directed all UN agencies to mainstream indigenous issues
in their programs.
During the visit, the Government of Kenya assumed a controversial
position that ''everybody in Kenya is Indigenous''. However, Prof.
Stavenhagen explained at length the criteria for indentifying
indigenous peoples.
