Ogiek Summoned by Provincial administration

13.11.2006

Dear All,

Following the last week Ogiek invasion to the illegal land allocated (Ngongongeri area) to powerful individuals in the former regime, the provincial administration led by Njoro District Officer and the Njoro Officer commanding station summoned the Ogiek group, who later appeared this morning.

The majority are from Kopyegon Clan. The land had a court order obtained in 1997 by the ogiek in East Mau challanging the demarcation. The case has not been finalised being a sign: Justice delayed is justice denied.

Its alleged that 6 of them were arrested and later released some few hours ago as the members of Ogiek increased outside the police station. Approximatetly 1700 ogiek had subdivided the land to themselves.

Its believed that the powerful individuals who were named in the Ndugu report on illegal land allocations have been liasing with the provincial administration in the area to evict Ogiek who had acquired the land back successfully or peacefully last week. Ogiek were in an attempt to construct houses by last weekend but heavy security personnel was deployed to the site.

The tension is high across Nessuit and Beeston areas as Ogiek are waiting for the resolution to be reached today with the provincial administration.

Its high time that the Ministry for Lands and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights intervene and they must ensure that all Ogiek land has been protected from land grabbers. I do also call upon the religious Organisations to pray for the Ogiek so as they may secure justice.

All the Ogiek land cases should be determined quickly.

Keep in touch for more updates.
